About the Community Resource
Sovereign Hill is an open-air museum located in Ballarat, Victoria, that recreates aspects of life on the Ballarat goldfields during the nineteenth century. The site includes reconstructed historical buildings, costumed interpreters, gold panning, demonstrations, museum collections and educational experiences relating to the Victorian Gold Rush. Sovereign Hill provides students with opportunities to investigate Australian history through immersive and place-based learning. During my visit, I explored the different precincts, historical displays and artefacts and observed how the site presents the experiences of people who lived on and around the goldfields. These experiences demonstrate the potential of Sovereign Hill as an engaging community resource for primary HASS education.
